Our recent three month stay in Playa Del Carmen gave us plenty of time to visit many of the beautiful surrounding areas, such as the fabulous beaches and Maya Ruins of Tulum, amazing snorkelling with turtles in Akumal, fresh water cenotes, the cute little beach town of Puerto Morelos, the jungle-clad Mayan ruins of Coba and Isla Cozumel – Mexico’s third-largest island – all of which are within easy reach of Playa Del Carmen. Spending three months in Playa Del Carmen on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula turned out to be the perfect place for us to, start our Latin American adventure. With plenty of cheap language schools in which to learn Spanish, great weather, fast wifi and a modern infrastructure, Playa always felt safe and comfortable, although it wasn’t always the traditional Mexican town that we were looking for, or expecting in this part of Mexico.
Waking early to the sound of the cockerel in our beautiful new home, we soon began to enjoy the relaxed pace of life in Penestanan on the outskirts of Ubud in Bali. Intimate visits with our host family to local temples, traditional community street theatre and the insatiable beauty of the surrounding countryside were real highlights our time there, but amongst all of the beauty and traditions, we discovered that Bali has a dangerous cancer that’s growing from the inside out.
